SAVES THE WORLD ENTIRE

Oskar Schindler
Righteous among the Nations
WHOEVER SAVES ONE LIFE: In 1939, a businessman named Oskar Schindler arrived in Poland trying to make his fortune from the Second World War. As a source of cheap labor for his munitions factory he staffed it with Jews from a nearby concentration camp. When the German SS began to exterminate millions of Polish Jews, Schindler used his entire fortune to bribe Nazi party and military leaders in order to save as many Jews as he could. He died broke on October 9th, 1974. Yet, Schindler has a tree planted in his name along the Avenue of the Righteous in Jerusalem for saving over 1,100 Jews.

I share the story above because the closing scene from the movie Schindler’s List is forever imprinted on my mind. As the war comes to a close, Oskar is surrounded by the hundreds of Jews he has saved. The Jews show their appreciation to Schindler with a ring inscribed in Hebrew saying “whoever saves one life saves the world entire.” In the gravity of this moment He begins to reflect on what he could have done to save more.  This story reminds me that Jesus came to save the lost and commanded us to fulfill His work as we share the Gospel of our Saviors love and life. It is also a reminder there will be a day when time has run out.
